Join the IditaREAD! - March's Reading Challenge

If you visited Lee's LMC during the month of March you would have heard students excitedly discussing mushers, Alaska, dog sleds, serum runs, frozen bays and other interesting terms. In addition to reading the book Togo by Robert J. Blake, students followed the Iditarod racers, called mushers, and their sled dog teams over 1150 miles of some of the roughest, most beautiful terrain in the world via the Internet. One purpose was to learn something new and exciting about another part of our great country; another purpose was to set the stage for the library's March Reading Challenge - "Join the IditaREAD!"

While Iditarod mushers and their teams  raced over 1150 miles along the Iditarod Trail, Lee students were reading and quizzing on AR books to accumulate a 1150 Word Count or more. In weekly library classes and computer lab classes, the third through fifth graders learned about "The Last Greatest Race on Earth," the Iditarod of Alaska, via the official website (www.iditarod.com) . Students also used the website to "problem solve" using race charts and graphs, and to use the Alabama Virtual Library's Kidbits database (www.avl.lib.al.us) to locate information to "compare and contrast" the states of Alaska and Alabama.

Over 330 students completed the IditaREAD Challenge and read over 9,600,000 words in just three weeks!

Visit the Lee Intermediate LMC!

The Lee Intermediate Library Media Center is a place where learning occurs, rather than just an area where learning materials are stored.  From a room full of empty shelves and stacked boxes in the fall of 2003, our library collection has evolved and grown to nearly 12,000 items.

Our impressive collection includes over 1,200 picture books, over 3,500 fiction titles, and almost 6,500 nonfiction books available for checkout to our students. Visual materials, reference books, and professional books are also available for check out by our teachers to complement their classroom curriculum.

Don't Throw it Away -  Raise Funds Today!

The Library Media Center directs three fundraising efforts at Lee Intermediate: Cartridges for Kids, Box Tops for Education, and Campbell's Labels for Education.

Cartridges for Kids, a national program based in Colorado, pays cash for laser and inkjet cartridges, used cell phones, digital cameras, video games, PDAs and iPods. (Note: They no longer recycle Epson Inkjet cartridges, toner bottles, toner tubes or printer ribbons.)  We have earned over $1000.00 in the past thanks to students and parents who have contributed recyclables to this program. For more information, visit the website: www.cartridgesforkids.com.

BoxTops for Education pays 10 cents per boxtop coupon. In 2006-07, Lee Intermediate collected 4450 boxtops earning $445.00. In 2007-08, we earned $493.50.  For a complete list of products that carry the BoxTop coupon visit: www.boxtops4education.com.

Campbell's Labels for Education provides points based on the number of labels deposited. We redeem the points to earn FREE stuff for our school! For more information about this program and a list of participating products, visit the website at www.labelsforeducation.com.

Help Build Classroom Libraries!

Mrs. Blount offers teachers a free paperback book for every three completed Box Tops for Education or Campbell's Labels Collection Sheets that are turned in to the Media Center. The books are a welcome addition to classroom libraries. Students are encouraged to ask friends and family members to save BoxTops and Campbell's labels throughout the school year and during the summer months to help build classroom libraries.
